Almost the end of the year. No, not the time of year to buy a plethora of presents for family and friends. Not the time of year to start holiday cooking, recreating mouth-watering dishes or creating new ones for family and friends to enjoy. Not the time of year to begin getting my taxes ready. It's that time of year where I attend a special conference. All throughout the year, I attend many conferences, meetings, seminars, one- on-ones, etc. This conference is special because the guest speaker is someone that I know personally and is the only person who can decide in what direction me and my business will go. Who is this sought after speaker? Me! It's my annual State of "Me" conference.

Every year, I sit down with myself whether at home or away to think about the direction of my business. As an owner of a thriving publishing company, there is lots to consider. I have been doing this for about 5 years now, and I really look forward to this time. I start by planning when and where I will hold the conference. I know it sounds daft but like any conference, setting is everything. What time of day will I have my conference? Any time the house is free of my husband and child for an extended period of time. For me, this is usually when my husband is away at at work and my son is at school. In recent years, before the husband and the child combo, I would pick a simple getaway or weekend away somewhere. Any hotel with nice ambiance would do. Since the wonderful additions in my life, I have begun to have them at my home. I usually pick a comfortable room in my house. The room is not always my office but just a place where I can bring my laptop and hot peach chamomile tea. The process is simple and doesn't take me long because the agenda is about me and for me.

1. Opening session and Thank yous. I start with a prayer thanking God for all that he has afforded me . I thank him for all the ups and downs, the good, the bad, the successes and the pitfalls. Most importantly, I thank God for another year open in business. Running a publishing company is not always easy, but I love what I do.

2. The Agenda--old business. Five years ago, I kept most of my notes in a notebook that looked like it was twenty years old because of the wear and tear it endured throughout the year. Now,I just have to get to my gmail notes agenda. I love this feature of google. It lets me keep a running agenda and I can scratch through my accomplishments. I look through my accomplishments and celebrate them with myself. It's important for me to see them. It reminds me of where I was a year ago and how far I've come.

3. The Agenda--new business. Reviewing my gmail notes agenda and seeing what hasn't been scratched through helps me to focus on what is left for me to do. It also allows me to explore why these items are still remaining. Is it time related? Resource? Or both? This is also where I add to the list. Things that I need to add in order to reach the reach the next level. For example, I recently became a filmmaker. I have a whole new list of agenda items relating to my upcoming film. This is exciting and fun because it is a new challenge for me, but it still requires work and organization on my part.

4. The Plan. This is my favorite part of the conference. I love this part because I love a challenge. This is the part where I review my new resources( contacts, printers, illustrators, software) against my old or undone agenda items (fiction authors, cookbook authors, PR firm, media contacts, etc). I strategize how I will get these accomplished. Will I need outside help? Do I need to reach out to those in my contact list? Have I made enough time to get these things done? Have I allocated enough money? Am I giving my clients what they need? Am I capable of taking them to the next level of sales, exposure, etc. It is a very honest and gut wrenching assessment of me and what I have done and can do.

5. The Closing. As the conference comes to a close, I plan my goals for the next year. Same process. Add them to the gmail notes agenda. Notate any takeaways that impact my family and prepare to take those to the State of the "Family" Conference. Yes, the State of "Me' conference impacts the State of the "Family" Conference. The "Family" Conference is very similar to the "Me" conference, but it involves my family and our goals collectively. Everyone gets a turn and everyone helps plan our future goals. As I close out the "Me" conference, I excitedly look forward to the new year. I think about what challenges lie ahead, and I look forward to them as well. Without challenge, there is no growth. I enjoy growing my publishing company, and I look forward to the future. Tea is finished. Notes on laptop updated. Meeting adjourned.

Lucinda Dunn-Page

www.DunnDealPublishing.com

@DunnDealPublish

deal.lucinda@gmail.com Now what? How do you get your book noticed? Where do you start? Here are some ways to promote your book. The main thing to remember is to BE CREATIVE. We are in very challenging times. However, don't let the recession intimidate you. Be confident about your work. People are still buying books!

1. Start with simple things like get all your friends, family, and colleagues to write reviews on Amazon about your book. This way you have POSITIVE reviews.

2. Send reviews to all journals and magazines that review books in your genre. Your publisher will do this, but it doesn't hurt to help. Besides, you may know of a magazine or journal that they don't.

3. Create a website for the book. This does not have to be a lengthy website. Just a couple of pages that talks about your book and also tells where they can get the book.

4. Offer sample chapters as free downloads. Turn a few pages or chapters into PDF files. Let people download them for free.

5. Use material from your book in your blog. Blogging is a great way to generate buzz about your book. Put sections of the book in the blog and credit the book as the source. This gets your book tagged in the world wide web.

6. Start an email newsletter. Encourage people to sign up on your site and then send out an occassional newsletter. Occasional...means not every day. When you send your newsletter make sure you have new info to send to them. People like to get something that adds value to their life. Don't spam!

7. Offer yourself for interview on radio stations. Most radio station are looking for interesting interviews and the author or a newly published book has a chance of getting on air. You need a publicity letter which says something interesting or controversial about the book. This should get your booked.

8. Offer books as prizes. Local radio shows, conferences, and other organizations love giveaways. Some will run competitions and will give you valuable publicity if you give them a few books to to give away as prizes.

9. Give away copies to the right people. Give copies to potential and and existing clients. Even though you are looking for sales, just like newspapers, books travel. (People will pass along books)

TL Blythers and Mika Dika on 24HrMomshow

http://www.blogtalkradio.com/24hrmom/2011/07/19/the-24hrmom-show-presents-in-the-lounge-feat-mommy-writters

Author TL Blythers gets it right every time. Also with me was the author of Surely, You Have Thought of This, Mr. Terry Page.

Terry did an oustanding job talking about his book and relevant topics such as politics, love, relationships, business and life.

Enjoy the pics and until next time,

Do what you do best!

KIDS!!! answers to Kessie's Tales Activity1--KIDS!!!

Hi Kids!

Thank you for listening all about Kessie and history. After working as a Top 40 radio announcer, he began hosting the local portion of "All Things Considered" in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. He went on to cover news for CBS and CNN affiliates before moving to television where he worked as an assignment editor for stations in North Carolina.

The author of the book, Surely, You Have Thought of This, Terry was born in Rochester, Michigan just outside of Detroit where he grew up as a fan of music and radio commentary. He began writing short stories at an early age. His second grade teacher was so impressed with Terry's imaginative prose that she encouraged him to write more and later had his stories published.

Terry has always been fascinated by the lives and careers of the U.S. presidents. He has made it both his hobby and career analyzing the thought process of the nation's leaders, constantly questioning the educational system, and pushing reforms geared toward entrepreneurship.

After leaving the news business, Terry refocused his efforts on commentary and assisting people finding their way in business. He believes if people focus their attention outward, society will move forward at a faster more productive pace.

Terry currently lives in the Carolinas and enjoys writing, traveling, and spending time with family and friends.

About Avva Scott, Author of When God Speaks to Me, From His Heart to Mine!

An open and expressive writer, Avva Scott now shares her private prayers with us all. It has been a long year with so many things or shall I say challenges in my life. Of course, nothing is too hard for my God. I truly thank him for all that he has done, will do, and is doing. However, every now and then, we all have things or obstacles, giants, if you will, that come in our life and we have to say... " is this for real!" I have had some "I can't believe this" moments, some "why me Lord" moments, some "what in the world" moments, some "I don't know what to do" moments, and some "you must not know about me" moments. Through it all, God has kept me. Through it all, God has been my resource. The power of Him. Without God, I wouldn't have been able to go through any of those moments. Just like in the book of Samuel, God chose the least to show his amazing power.

In the story of David and Goliath (some of you know the story), God told Samuel to go and take his oil and go in the camp and find Jesse who has sons. He said to anoint the man as king. Samuel asked Jesse to bring his sons to him. He said the Lord has chosen a man to lead his army. Of course, Jesse thought it was his oldest. In those days, the oldest was automatically the next in line for leadership. God told Samuel that was not the one. As the story goes, Jesse kept bringing his sons before Samuel and each time, Samuel presented him to God. God said, "no, not this one." Finally, Jesse was out of sons to present, but Samuel asked if he had another one. Jesse said yes, but he was a boy. Samuel asked God if the boy David was the one, and God said yes. Samuel was puzzled, but God had chosen a boy to do the work of a man to prove that by his Spirit, power, all things are possible.

As you know David had to face the giant Goliath. Goliath was a huge giant, and David was just a tiny boy. Although, small in size, David had worshipped, he had given God time. He had a relationship, a communication line to God. The longer David stayed in the presence of God, the stronger he became. The more time he stayed in God's presence, the smaller the giant became to David.

When it was time to fight the giant, they wanted to put Saul's armour on David. But David didn't need Saul's armour. He only needed the armour of God. David went up against the giant Goliath. As the story goes, he defeated the giant Goliath by using his sling shot. The stone hit Goliath in the middle of his forehead, the one spot that wasn't covered.

Goliaths in our lives sometimes seem really big. But when you take them to God, they become small in comparison. Put on the armour of the Lord, look those giants in the eye, and pull back your slingshot because God's got your victory! Just like David, God gave me the victory, and I can't take any credit. I have to say "look what the Lord has done!" There is nothing too hard for my God. The Goliaths in life are so small compared to our awesome God!

***This post was inspired by a wonderful pastor who took this message to a new level for me. I know that some will say that maybe it was politically incorrect to post this. If you know me, then you know I don't do what the Politically correct crowd wants. I am an original and not a copy. I don't even make apologies anymore. I shouldn't have to. My faith in God led me to send this post because someone has some Goliaths in their life, and he wants you to know that if you will just arm yourself with him, then those giants will fall.

Make Mine a Million.....

This post was supposed to have happened on October 7th....my birthday. However, after the excitement wore off, I crashed... I slept with visions of millions in my head. No, not really. I honestly don't think of money in that way. I think of it as a tool, and I attended one of the best events ever on my bday in Charlotte, NC. Picture business women networking, working together for a common goal. The goal was that some lucky small business owner would leave with a total business package of 1MM to grow her business!!!

The organization is Count Me In and the conference or event was Make Mine a Million $ Business. The task. A simple elevator pitch could get you the goods. Well, simple is overstating it. These ladies had awesome elevator pitches and even more Awesome businesses! Yes, I know you were waiting to hear me say awesomer. No, not going to happen in this post. ha! But the businesses varied from quilting to leather furniture. The common thread was the passion that the entrepreneurs had for their business. It was a passion that was contagious. Now me, personally, I am already passionate about what I do! However, it just added icing to the already huge gigantic piece of cake that I ooze on anyone that even asks me about publishing or writing.

The organization was founded by Nell Merlino, a wonderful visionary that has the experience, the drive, and the commitment to lead. A woman that can probably put more than 18 million cracks in that glass ceiling... (yes, I have respect for what Hilary did--just a comment about how great I think Nell is--so, no flack please). Nell Merlino strikes me as a woman who means what she says and says what she means but at the same time has the philosophy of show a woman how to fish and she will eat for life! The woman is amazing.

If Make Mine a Million $ Business ever comes to your town, I want you to go! Well, I guess I am speaking to the ladies. No, men if your lady, wife, significant other has a business and she wants to see it go to the next level, I suggest she gets counted in and Makes hers a million $ Business in 09! It can happen... or shall I say it can be "Dunn".

Sleep has overtaken me... until next time...

Bucket List

Tonight while enjoying a little down time (yes, I know most of you don't believe that I rest, but I do), I watched a great movie on DVD. I usually go to the movies and see things that are rated G (yes, the 6 year-old usually chooses the movie), but tonight, I watched a great movie--Bucket List. I am huge fan of Morgan Freeman. He will forever be Hoke from Driving Miss Daisy to me. For my dad, he will always be the guy from Shawshank Redemption.

If you haven't seen Bucket List, it stars Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman. Of course, I love Jack Nicholson as well. I haven't seen a movie yet that he has appeared that I didn't like. Putting the two of them together in this movie was genius.

The plot of the movie: Two terminally ill men escape from a cancer ward and head off on a road trip with a wish list of to-dos before they die. They make a Kick the bucket list and set out to do everything on the list before they die.

Without spoiling the movie for you, I watched this movie and started thinking what am I waiting on? What is holding me back from doing the rest of the things that I want to do in life? The more I said this to myself, the more I realized that nothing is holding me back but me. For real. Nothing is holding me back but me. Don't get me wrong, I am proud of the things that I am doing. I am very happy and thrilled that I am fulfilling my purposes---publishing, writing, etc. ( Don't wait for someone else to pat you on the back, it may never come.) However, I started thinking about some of the things that I am putting off. The things I am putting off, I have reasoned in my mind to put them off for one reason or another. Reasons like, I will do this when I have more money.... I will do that when I have completed this... I will take care of that after I've done this or that....

Do you have a list like that? I am sure you do. Most of us do. Take a good look at your list and really examine the things you are putting off for your business. More than likely there are things that can be crossed off with a touch of networking, reaching out to the right people,or researching the internet. Mmh, what's on your list?

1. Business license -get up and get it...most cost less that $100.00
2. Website--you can get an effective one for less that $200.00 (email me)
3. Logo--less than $80.00 (email me for info)
4. Business Cards--$ around $50.00 or free (ask me how)
5. Promotional products to advertise your business (I know how to get them at cost)
6. Advertising (that is an easy one--and can show you multiple ways to get it without paying a fortune)
7. Start up money---(grants, loans, cash for business)
8. Networking events
9. Creative products and services
10. Need to reach more customers

If any of these are on your bucket list, start crossing them off! Let me show you how you can get these off your list with just a few simple clicks. Just like in the movie, Freeman and Nicholson were both two men who had lead different lives, but in the end, they had the same goals. We are not that much different from each other. If you own a business, chances are you are looking to excel in that business. I don't care if you own a restaurant, publish books, sell cars, work your Mary Kay business, you want to excel. Now, your definition of excelling may be different from others but ultimately, you want a successful business.

Write your Bucket List and get started crossing things off the list. The more you cross off, the more you will start reaching your business goals. If you need help with your bucket list, email me @ Lucinda@TheRockHillRunway.com . Let's work together to finish your list.

Branding your business

The other day, I was having a business meeting and someone asked me what is branding. I said it is the same as when you get up and put on clothes. You dress your business. It's up to you if you decide to dress it up formally, casually or somewhere in between. This goes from websites, business cards, business name, promotional products, logos, to blogs....

I promised myself in these blogs I would not make you read all about my day and how life changing it was--honestly every day is life changing. Not to mention, I am beyond blessed with all the wonderful things, places, and people I get to meet. I love owning a Newspaper!

But back to the topic... I want to get you the information you need. I get these questions and I am trying my best to give as much as I can. This is a give and take site though. I want you to share with me...tell me about something new or if you disagree, say so. We will be respectful but we will also share and just like family, we may "fall out" but at the end of the day, we are still family.

1. You need business cards. This is a must. People need a way to reach you and something to refer back to. I lose scraps of paper but business cards are my reference after a long day.
Do you need business cards at an affordable price--email me Lucinda@TheRockHillRunway.com

What is affordable..do you have $50.00-80.00...then you cna have business cards?

2. Do you need a LOGO? I hear some questions out there about what is a logo?
A logo is short for logotype...it is a graphic element for a trademark or brand

I.E., when you think about Target, what do you see...bullseye right? When I say the following what do you see...
McDonalds
Wal Mart
Google

Get the idea?
If you need one, let me know.... Remember affordable. Logos give your company image, style...it speaks volumes about your business.

I think I will stop here and talk about the other parts of branding in another post.

email me with any questions. I am here to help.

Almost a year later

Wow...can you believe that it has been almost a year to date that I've visited this blog!
Shame on me!!!
